Tofukuji Temple Founder's Hall Fumon-in Garden

Passing through the Romon gate, there is a stone-paved approach to the Kaisan-do Den'ikaku. To the right of the Kaisan-do is a pond modelled on the Sanzu River, followed by a mountain. In this direction are the imperial tombs within the grounds of Sennyuji Temple, representing the spirit world. To the left of the Kaisan-do is white sand and Fumon-in Temple, where the monks live, and behind them is Kyoto city, where many people live, representing the human world. Monks walking along the stone-paved approach are somewhere between life and death, and as they contemplate life and death they come closer to the teachings of Shoichi Kokushi, who is enshrined in the Kaisan-do. It is a garden that explains Zen training in an easy-to-understand way.
